Dear Mr. Bolles:
Thanks for answering my questions on the phone. Here is a
writeup on the %2Dialnet%1 project. We expect to have a preliminary
version of the protocols in a few months, and we will then send you
a copy for your comments.
As I explained on the phone, we have both short and long
range problems. As for the short range problem, we shall buy two
modems in the next month or so for our experiments, but this won't
prejudice our long range decision on what modem protocols to use.
We need to be more careful about our long range decision, since
if %2Dialnet%1 proves as popular as I expect it will, the consequences
of mistake may have a long life. As I see it, our primary objective
should be to avoid (if we can) putting %2Dialnet%1 users in any technological
blind alley. Moreover, we feel an obligation to be fair among
manufacturers.
We will be grateful for any advice you may offer
and will try to pay good attention to it.
